Why is Pride month in June?

June of each year marks both the start of summer, and for the LGBTQIA+ community, and supporters, the beginning of Pride month. June is a significant month for the gay community due largely to the timing of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, which began on June, 28th of 1969. Beginning in the 70s, various cities around the country, including New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, D.C. and other large metropolitan areas began to organize small parades to show support for the gay community. As homosexuality was considered a sin by many, those who chose to march in these parades often faced attacks and condemnation by their friends or family.  Luckily, a lot has changed over the last 45 years, and today, LGBTQIA+ pride is celebrated across the world in large events, such as World Pride, metropolitan city prides, such as Houston Pride, and even small city events, such as Grand Rapids Pride.
